Recent projects that we have been involved in include...

gvSIG Collaboration gvSIG Collaborator  EduAction - GIS Solutions has signed a collaboration agreement with the gvSIG Association, becoming the first company in Africa to do so. The aim of the agreement is to promote business collaboration around gvSIG and free geomatics, in order to generate synergies and consolidate the local business network.

gvSIG is a fully functional open source GIS solution that allows companies to implement a GIS with minimal costs. EduAction - GIS Solutions provides full support and training in gvSIG. The software is available in many languages and can be downloaded for free.

RDC - Street Vendor Project Street Vendor Density  GIS Solutions has created an Excel Database for Reform Development Consulting (RDC) who were conducting a pilot study of the density of street vendors in the eThekwini Metro. GIS software was used to spatially identify and calculate the number of facilities that were found in each planning unit (enumerator area) of eThekwini in order to determine the density of activity for street vendors within the municipality; looking at the different density categories of enumerator areas according to their spatial development framework.

The project involved creating an Excel database with all the data that fell within a specific Enumerator area and creating various maps showing street vendor densities and the facilities within specific enumerator areas.

Masifundisane Adult Literacy Campaign Masifundisane Database  Masifundisane Database The Masifundisane Adult Literacy Campaign, run by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, aims to make more than 1.9 million people literate by 2008. EduAction has supported this project in a number of key areas, including developing a method for mapping training sites by means of aerial photography. This resulted in a significant saving to the campaign as the location of these sites could be identified from the photographs, rather than having to visit each site with a GPS receiver. We were also involved in the development of a desktop tool allowing learners and facilitators to be captured into a database for analysis and reporting.

Corridor Sands Project Corridor Sands Database In May 2008 EduAction provided Database & GIS support and GPS training for the Corridor Sands Project in Chibuto, Mozambique. A strong hands-on approach was adopted for the GPS training, with participants being shown how to map features, record track logs, and how to transfer data to and from a computer. EduAction also assisted in the development of a database to manage the mine resettlement programme.

Energy and Combustion Services GIS Solutions has been providing GIS support to Energy and Combustion Services, a company specialising in fuel and energy management systems. This support has involved the mapping of haul roads at Jwaneng diamond mine in Botswana, Gieta gold mine in Tanzania and the Sishen iron ore mine in South Africa. We have also developed route networks for assisting the routing of trucks in these mines.

Media in Education Trust Africa The Media in Education Trust Africa (MiETA) is a South African-based, not-for-profit organisation with a mission to support rural development. EduAction have been contracted on an ongoing basis to provide support in database development, mapping and data analysis. This includes assistance with staff training, design of research instruments, data integration and distance calculations.

Tropical Cyclone Analysis Cyclone tracks This project, performed for Safari and Tourism Insurance Brokers, assessed the levels of risk posed by tropical cyclones to tourist facilities along the coastal areas of Mozambique, Tanzania, Mauritius and the Seychelles. Proximity and buffer analysis performed on cyclone tracks dating back to 1950 were used to quantify the risks posed by these storms.
